Indiana Residents' Perceptions of Woodland Management

Purdue University scientists enlisted help from DJ Case to construct, administer, analyze, and report a telephone survey of 1,402 Indiana adults to understand residents' opinions about multiple aspects of forest management on public and private lands, including social acceptability of harvesting practices and environmental values orientations of Indiana residents. This research was initiated at the request of the Division of Forestry within the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which sought public input to help guide its forest management decisions. The Indiana forest products industry employs over 56,000 people, and ranks first nationwide in the production of wood office furniture, wood kitchen cabinets, and hardwood veneer. Indiana residents gave majority approval to a variety of different management practices, and an overwhelming majority (88%) agreed with the statement, "Indiana woodlands should be managed for a balance of wood products that we use, and other benefits like recreation, wildlife, and good water quality."
